Publication on iodine status of pregnant women in Europe

A recent commentary by Professor Michael Zimmermann  (Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology 3; 672-674) discussed iodine deficiency in pregnant women in Europe. It was noted that there were still 21 countries (including the UK) where pregnant women were iodine deficient out of 54 countries (no data from 23). Strategies including iodine supplementation and introduction of iodised salt should be implemented.

UK Iodine Group chairmain, Professor John Lazarus,  discussed iodine supplementation in pregnancy at an iodine meeting held at The International Thyroid Conference in Orlando, USA in Oct 2016. He also briefly reviewed iodine status in Europe at The Milan EXPO Feeding the Planet, feeding it healthy in October.
